JSW Law Inaugurates First Child Justice Summer School
POSTED ON - Aug 26th, 2024
JSW School of Law inaugurated the first Summer School on access to justice for children at our Pangbisa campus, Paro. This landmark event, running until 5 September 2024, is focused on enhancing access to justice for children in Bhutan. The programme has brought together 20 participants from key institutions – the Judiciary, the Office of the Attorney General, the Royal Bhutan Police, Nazhoen Lamtoen, and the PEMA Secretariat.
The opening session was graced by Dean Sangay Dorjee and Ms. Andrea James, the Representative for UNICEF Bhutan. The summer school is the result of a comprehensive needs assessment conducted last year with key stakeholders and facilitated by a team of faculty members with support of UNICEF. The findings from this assessment were instrumental in designing the curriculum, which was further refined by experts from UNICEF.
Distinguished facilitators, including Professor Erin Daly, University of Delaware and Professor David Tushaus, Assistant Dean of Graduate and Experiential Learning at JSW Law; Faculty of Samtse College of Education alongside our JSW Law faculty, will lead the sessions. The program aims to equip participants with a deeper understanding of the complexities involved in child justice, covering topics such as child protection, restorative justice, and rights-based approaches to justice.
This initiative represents a significant step towards fostering a more inclusive and effective justice system, ensuring that the rights and needs of children are prioritised. We are grateful to UNICEF Bhutan for making this relevant and timely programme possible.
