Bhutan’s Environmental Leadership at COP28: Insights for the Next 50 Years

Tshering Dolkar, Lecturer, participated in a Roundtable Discussion on “Conservation in Bhutan: The Next 50 Years,” where panelists spoke about Bhutan’s approach to environmental conservation rooted in its Gross National Happiness philosophy, which seeks balanced development and conservation. With over half of its geographical area conserved, Bhutan is home to endemic wildlife and flora, including endangered species.
During the session, Tshering spoke about the constitutional protection of the environment and climate change in Bhutan, as well as Bhutan’s commitment to international conventions and protocols. She highlighted the JSW Law’s efforts on climate change law and policy, including the Climate Center, environmental clinic, Paro Forum, summer school, and a graduate program for international students. She also discussed strategies for the next 50 years in climate change law and policy.
The other panelists were Dr. Pema Wangda of Bhutan For Life, Dr. Tempa Tshering of the Bhutan Ecological Society, Dr. Karma Tshering of the Bhutan Trust Fund, Dr. Kinley Tenzin of the Royal Society for the Protection of Nature, and Mr. Sonam Wangdi, Chief Forestry Officer of the Department of Forest and Park Services.
