Why give to JSW Law?

General support gifts make up the very foundation of JSW Law’s fundraising effort. Such gifts provide opportunities that are critical to the learning experience for students, all of whom are on full scholarships to JSW Law.  You can make an immediate and direct impact today by giving now! JSW Law also seeks gifts to support the following specific programmes or funds:

JSW Law Giving update

Thanks to a recent start-up grant and pledge for three additional years of support, totaling US$939,900, from Karuna Foundation, JSW Law will launch the new Climate Change and Policy Project, to be implemented by the JSW Law Climate Change and Environmental Law Centre of Excellence.  We have also received US$60,000 for this Project from The Asia Foundation.  These commitments will enable us to hold a special Paro Forum in February of 2023, which will gather leaders and stakeholders from Bhutan and around the world to impart lessons and drive forward momentum in effectively addressing climate change.  We are so grateful to the Karuna Foundation for making this possible, and to The Asia Foundation for their support as well!

We would also like to thank all our friends and supporters who have helped us to raise US$60,000 for the JSW Law Sustainability Fund, including matching grants from White & Case Chairman Hugh Verrier and Karuna Foundation President Eric Lemelson.  Funds raised are being used for the following purposes:

  • New Campus: Equipment, computers, and furniture that cannot be funded through government support.
  • Law School Operations: Faculty research and conferences; food and security for campus events.
  • Student Activities: Externships in the 10th semester, taking place each Spring semester.
  • Technology Infrastructure: ICT structure to enable and improve online learning and events.

JSW Law Sustainability Fund

While Bhutan has received plaudits from around the world for its effective response to the Covid-19 pandemic, unfortunately, these measures have had a significant impact on the national economy. As a publicly-funded law school, JSW School of Law has shouldered its share of the financial burden over the last year, cutting or deferring programmes and expenses as needed in order to support the national efforts. As we enter the second year of pandemic-related measures and as JSW Law prepares for an exciting move to a new campus, we seek to raise US$500,000 designated for operating support to help sustain JSW Law through these difficult times.  Gifts of $40,000 have been raised to date, including a 1:1 match by White & Case Chair Hugh Verrier and Karuna Foundation President Eric Lemelson.  Gifts up to an additional $20,000 will continue to be matched by these donors.
